Using Public WIFI Safely

I write online in coffee shops several times a week. I recognize that there are some privacy concerns involved in such behavior, but I really enjoy the experience.

I encountered this "instructable" explaining how Mac users can improve their privacy when using public wifi and implemented a couple of the recommendations. I am mostly concerned that passwords may be stolen and it is my understanding of the recommendations I implemented that these adjustments would not prevent this problem. The changes were worth making, but will not prevent snooping. No banking and no credit card use via public wiki.
